Chapter 7

Kerri considered the choices that were in front of her and thought hard about the decision. Not that this would be a difficult decision because she knew which one she wanted to get, but she didn’t think it would be the one that Jake had in mind. They were all so cute, and she wanted to take them all home.

“So, which one do you think that Momoko will like?”

Kerri didn’t bother to look at Jake who stood next to her but continued to consider the choices. “I think that she would like any one of them for her birthday. But if I had to choose the one that she would like the most, it would be that one.” She pointed to the big brown dog that sat alone in the wire cage. There was something about him that just tugged at Kerri’s heart. He looked so proud and lonely, and his eyes implored her to pick him.

“Kerri. He’s not a puppy. He’s also huge, and we don’t have the room.” Kerri could hear the humor mixed with exasperation in his voice but ignored it.

“Oh, please. You don’t have the room? He’s supposed to be big. He’s a Great Dane.”

“Momoko will be afraid of him.” Jake tried another argument, but Kerri was resolute. It would be the Great Dane that they would bring home for Momoko’s birthday that was six days away.

“No she won’t. Great Danes are very gentle dogs. We had one when I was her age. They make excellent family pets and are great guard dogs. I told Momoko that I had one when I was little, and she told me that she wanted one, too.” Kerri looked over at Jake and saw him scowl. There was a humorous look in his eyes as he did so.

“So that’s why she’s decided that she wants a dog for her birthday. I can blame you for this. Who’s going to take care of him? Look at him.”

Kerri could see that he was running out of arguments, so she went in for the kill. “He’s already housebroken and has grown out of the ‘need to chew everything to bits’ phase. All that you need to do is to show him where to do his business, feed him, give him an occasional grooming, and show him where to sleep.”

“It will cost too much to feed him.” Jake tried one more argument. He was clearly out of arguments if he was trying that one. She looked over at the manager of the animal shelter and shared a smile with her. The manager knew who Jake was because he was a celebrity and the pride of Matsumoto. She found Jake’s latest argument amusing, too, but she had the good grace not to laugh. Kerri, however, didn’t and laughed at him.

“Do you even hear yourself?” Jake looked down at her and actually looked embarrassed because he had said something so ridiculous. Then he smiled sheepishly, sighed dramatically, and told the shelter manager that they were taking the Great Dane.
